Lost in Emoticons.

I've had a bad day, but this site just made it way better.

Lost in Emoticons is a collection of IM's between a young girl living it up in NYC and her Chinese mom's attempt to communicate with her. – yesbutnobutyes

Vintage Smokey Bear commercial.

It's a shame there are no sweet, simple commercials like this first one anymore. It'd be a nice break from the norm now.

Probably not as functional as it is fun, but I'd love to have one of these.

Send Your Name to the Moon.

Hopefully, this won't bite me in the butt later. You'd better act responsibly, NASA. No pillaging resources (moon cows, moon ferns, moon cheese, etc.). No fast food restaurants. Put everything back where you found it. Thank you.

Sign up to send your name to the moon. Names will be collected and placed onboard the LRO spacecraft for its historic mission bringing NASA back to the moon. You will also receive a certificate showcasing your support of the mission.

The deadline is June 27, 2008 for the submission of names.

No birds were harmed for this art.

I love it when I see any piece of art that makes me look twice, makes me assume something terrible, then teaches me something really lovely.

Ornithologists now use mist nets instead of shotguns for data that cannot be obtained with the help of binoculars, microphones, or telephoto lenses. These nearly invisible nets are set up like fences and function as huge spider webs, catching unsuspecting birds. The researcher carefully extracts the bird from the net. Each bird is measured, aged, sexed, and banded with an individually numbered anklet (Audubon’s philopatry experiments with Eastern Phoebes was likely the first bird banding done in the United States). Then the bird is released, unharmed.

Ray Fenwick makes me happy.

I'd like an RSS feed straight from his brain. Then I'd like to buy him a beer. In no particular order.

I recently became obsessed with the idea of friendship bracelets, those colourful little woven bracelets that kids used to make for each other to symbolize their friendship, to make it official. There is something sweet about them, simplifying the idea of friendship, making it explicit and almost serving as a tribute to the very concept. I love things like this, so ridiculous and silly on one hand and yet, kind of profound and complex. I painted a bunch of them over the past month. - Ray Fenwick, Hit List

Day of the Dead Lovers & Dog in Canoe with Grim Reaper.

I'm so happy to see that Silver Crow Creations has started an Etsy shop. Their online store is a fantastic flea market, but completely overwhelming. Their etsy store is a radically pared-down version.

I'm tempted to buy this just because the dog makes me giggle.

These lovers are embarking upon a life anew. They have brought their pet dog and The Grim Reaper or the Santisima Muerte acts as gondolier.

This little vignette has been hand sculpted and painted by traditional artisans in Mexico.

Unfortunately, the young man has lost his forearm. We suspect that he has had a shark accident, but we can't be sure.

Happy birthday, computer.

Sixty years ago the "modern computer" was born in a lab in Manchester.

The Small Scale Experimental Machine, or "Baby", was the first to contain memory which could store a program.

The room-sized computer's ability to carry out different tasks - without having to be rebuilt - has led some to describe it as the "first modern PC".

Using just 128 bytes of memory, it successfully ran its first set of instructions - to determine the highest factor of a number - on 21 June 1948.

SAINT ANTHONY the Abbot - Patron Saint of Bacon

Protector of pigs, hermits, gravediggers and epileptics.

Saint Anthony was heralded as a modest and courteous man. He lived for 20 years barricaded in an abandoned fort, having contact with people only when his admirers broke in. Known for healing skin diseases and inflammations, he is often depicted with a pig because pork fat was used as a treatment with similar results. Being identified with pigs led the swine herders to take him as their patron. For this reason, he has become the Patron Saint of Bacon.

Our figure pictures him with a frying pan with two strips of crispy, delicious bacon.

Prayer to Assist with the Enjoyment of Quality Bacon

O wonderous St. Anthony, please bless me with an abundance of quality bacon and grant me the patience and timing to properly fry each glorious strip. Amen.

Bloom: peddling green.

Sweet and funny product design proposal.

The Bloom device is meant to be a subversive and inspirational tool for our concrete jungles. Similar to the tuft of a dandelion as the wind carries the seedling, we propose a way of dispersing seedlings with bubbles and bicycling. Seeds are co-mingled with a bubble mixture and upon pedaling to your destination , you release the floating seeds which land in cracks and crevices throughout the city streets. Over time, the seeds grow into flowers and plants to create a green "fringe" to our sidewalks and streets.

National Geographic Magazine : Gorilla Massacre.

Shocking, sad, educational and beautiful, all at once. This video "documents the significance of the recent gorilla massacres in the Democratic Republic of Congo." The killings were apparently motivated by a political battle between industrialists and conservationists.

The pictures below show park rangers and people of the area sadly and ceremoniously removing the body of a great silverback from the jungle.
