TileTats.

If I had a tiled kitchen, I'd be all over these. An easy, fairly inexpensive way to dress up your tiles. (p.s. I want that radio.)

Music by birds.

Yes, I'm late to the game on this one. But, in case anyone else is, too, I'm posting it.

Reading a newspaper, I saw a picture of birds on the electric wires. I cut out the photo and decided to make a song, using the exact location of the birds as notes (no Photoshop edit). I knew it wasn't the most original idea in the universe. I was just curious to hear what melody the birds were creating.

I sent the music to the photographer, Paulo Pinto, who I Googled on the internet. He told his editor, who told a reporter and the story ended up as an interview in the very same newspaper.

Here I've posted a short video made with the photo, the music and the score (composed by the birds).

Okay. One more cat post, then I gotta go. The combination of inappropriate cat headdress and their surly expressions made me laugh.

No time this year, but maybe next. These are fab. And would be a nice homage to my Oskar.

SmartSpace Food Dispenser.

Ooh. I'd love one of these. (Not sure about the plastic knobs, though.)

By securing the dispenser to the wall, you can create additional storage without having it getting in the way on the countertops. Plus, the dry foods inside are now easily accessible with just a twist of the handle. Only one twist dispenses 1 ounce of product perfectly portion-controlled every time! The included measuring cup that fits on each canister makes it easy to work the wall-mounted SmartSpace Dispenser into your cooking routine. This dispenser is a space-efficient accessory for every kitchen.

Onion "Gentrification" doormat.

This made me laugh. If you've ever lived in a crap neighborhood and hated your neighbors, you know this feeling. It'd be funny in a bad neighborhood, possibly even funnier in an already gentrified neighborhood.

Our new 19.5" x 29.5" outdoor mat is fade and weather resistant and has a vinyl backing. Perfect for your shit-hole apartment or your cookie-cutter mansion.

Limited edition Saul Bass print.

It's a shame the shipping costs from the UK are almost as much as the purchase price. It's gorgeous.

Design Museum Shop: Saul Bass Exhibition Poster

It's a "So What" kinda day.

Miles and Trane make rainy days better.

"So What" is the first track on the 1959 Miles Davis and John Coltrane album Kind of Blue and is often credited as one of his best works.

It is one of the most well-known examples of modal jazz, set in the Dorian mode and consisting of 16 bars of D minor7, followed by eight bars of Eb minor7 and another eight of D minor7. This AABA structure puts it in the format of popular song structure.

The piano and bass introduction for the piece was written by Gil Evans for Bill Evans and Paul Chambers on Kind of Blue. An orchestrated version by Gil Evans of this introduction is later to be found on a television broadcast given by Miles' Quintet (minus Cannonball Adderley who was ill that day) and the Gil Evans Orchestra; the orchestra gave the introduction after which the quintet produced a rendition of the rest of "So What".

The distinctive voicing employed by Bill Evans for the chords that interject the head, from the bottom up three perfect fourths followed by a major third, has been given the name "So What chord" by such theorists as Mark Levine.

While the track is taken at a very moderate tempo on Kind Of Blue, it is played at an extremely fast tempo on later live recordings by the Quintet, such as Four and More.

The same chord structure was later used by John Coltrane for his standard "Impressions".

Ode to Mix Tapes.

If someone wants to make a letterpress print of this in a really nice typeface, then give it away, I'll take it.

ODE TO MIX TAPES
by Sherman Alexie

These days, it's too easy to make mix tapes.
CD burners, iPods, and iTunes
Have taken the place
Of vinyl and cassette. And, soon
Enough, clever introverts will create
Quicker point-and-click ways to declare
One's love, lust, friendship, and favor.
But I miss the labor
Of making old school mix tapes-- the mid air

Acrobatics of recording one song
At a time. It sometimes took days
To play, choose, pause,
Ponder, record, replay, erase,
And replace. But there was no magic wand.
It was blue-collar work. A great mix tape
Was sculpture designed to seduce
And let the hounds loose.
A great mix tape was a three-chord parade

Led by the first song, something bold and brave,
A heat-seeker like Prince with "Cream,"
Or "Let's Get It on," by Marvin Gaye.
The next song was always Patsy Cline's "Sweet Dreams,"
or something by Hank. But O, the last track
Was the vessel that contained
The most devotion and pain
And made promises that you couldn't take back.

The Guardian Necklace.

This necklace is composed of a large genuine aspen leaf that has been plated in sterling silver and paried with a more petite aspen leaf that has been plated in 24K gold.

This necklace is very long (31 inches) and can wither be worn as is, where the leaves will dangle just above your belly, or, you can easily double up the chain around your neck and wear it as a multi stranded piece for added interest. Versatile and oh so stylish!

The large silver leaf measures about 2 inches and the smaller is about 1 inch. (May vary SLIGHTLY from piece to piece due to the nature of the product)

Permafrost - silence

Sadly, this doesn't actually seem to be for sale. But it's lovely.

The Silence rug is at first glance an impression of glistening white snow; a common sight in freezing Norway. Then you discover the tracks left by a passing hare; itself dressed in bright, shimmering winter fur.

Hosang Park featured on 20x200 today.

Love the shapes, details and colors.

I photograph small parks located within and around living spaces in downtown Seoul.

I pay attention to the images as seen from a bird’s-eye view. While working, I focus not on relating special stories about them but on just presenting the spaces. I think that pictures presented that way can be a pathway to remind viewers of their own thoughts on familiar places—in particular, their thoughts or discussions regarding parks. The parks, as seen here, from a bird's-eye view, reflect characteristics of downtown areas and distorted realities. In addition, they also reveal fabricated Korean-style space and the stark realities of democracy in a more comic way.

Red Royal Quiet De Luxe Typewriter

I love typewriters, but this has taken it to a whole new level. Look at that color!

Smashingly retro! Vintage Quite Deluxe typewriter, red in color. This 1950's typewriter would be stunning in one's office.

Overall condition is good. Typewriter works and is very clean. All of the components work but for some reason I don't remember how to unlock the space bar, or perhaps it isn't working? Red Royal logo plate on front. Comes with original case that has wear. Esthetically beautiful piece. Perhaps you'd like to start typing on a real typewriter?

In March 2009 a small town in Iceland was filled with speakers and music from the likes of Death In Vegas, Bob Dylan and the Guillemots. The Seydisfjordur village was turned into an extraordinary sound-system for a week.

The objective of the brand is inviting people to believe in experience superior sound and promote the latest audio technologies from Sony, offering an experience never before experienced.

Swiss Cheese Makers.

This one's going out to my long-distance roommate.

The Book about Swiss Cheese Makers began as an editorial project for a journalist friend. "I expected this to be an agricultural trip, meeting people who make a living through the production of cheese in a more or less industrial way," Scheffold confesses" But far from it: I met unorthodox lateral thinkers, visionary fellows, modest canny and successful people living and working in some of the most spectacular landscapes of Switzerland. Some sell their products abroad, inventing a new cheese every other month, some work exactly as they have learned from their fathers, now sometimes just selling to hikers visiting their remote location by chance. But all of them seemed to follow an individual vision they are not willing to betray for growth and money."

Possibly the funniest baby costume I've ever seen.

UPDATE 10.10.09 – Aww. I just heard from Lobster Baby's papa, Dennis Millette:

I saw your post on inkwellbookstore.blogspot.com, and I know exactly who the lucky baby is since I am the lucky baby's father. The photo was taken at a costume contest a few years back near our home in Sacramento. I can assure you that while she doesn’t fit in the pot anymore, she is just as cute as ever
