Wind-up Lamp

Just a concept - I hope someone produces it. So lovely, simple and practical.

This is for people who can’t sleep without the light. Also, people who read in the bed sometimes forget to turn off the light. The key functions as a switch and a timer. Wind-up to turn the light on before you go to bed. The light will stay on until the key winds back. You will come to know how many times you need to wind-up. Its main source of power comes from its powerful spring-driven generator. As the high carbon tensile steel spring unwinds, power is transferred to a small dynamo electric generator which produces enough electricity to power of the light.

Kleer Drain Instant Drain Opener.

Clogged drain? Plunging doesn't help? This thing is amazing. I used it a few days ago.

This silly-looking thing has compressed air cartridges. You load an air cartridge and push down the handle - it blows all the goo straight down the drainpipe. Worked like a charm on my BFF's clogged bathroom drain last weekend. No mess. No chemicals. SO cool. For 30 bucks (and a very tense moment while we pushed the plunger and waited for the sink to explode), it was totally worth it.

(Yes, I know this is a weird thing to blog, but if you're a single girl or guy and not particularly handy, you should take note.)

Yes, I am alive.

Sorry about the hiatus. I had a date in Tampa with a blond, blue-eyed boy with a great smile. It couldn't wait.

Anyway, my vacay prep ran right up to the last minute before I left. No time for goodbyes. But I'm back and will post soon. Hang in there, chums.

Thank you, Rethinking Schools.

Thanks to this interactive drag & drop map, I can listen to NPR with confidence. Seriously, I could not have told you where Azerbaijan was before I played this a few times. (Okay, a few dozen times.) A beautiful example of how educational the interweb can be.

I love before & afters.

First, just let me say - I am a big fan of retouching. But don't a lot of these celebrities look more beautiful without the digital touch-ups?

Foreign exchange.

Fantastic. (Isn't it strange to remember a time when people wouldn't assume this was a joke or a scam?)

For centuries, anthropologists have travelled overseas to live among ‘strange’ tribes and observe their ‘colourful’ ways. But rarely has it been tried the other way round. So what happened when a group of South Pacific islanders spent a month in Britain to study our own odd little lives?

My favorite stat.

On a personal note -- when skimming my traffic stats, I occasionally run across a visitor from an IP with this descriptor:

Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility

Whomever you are out there at Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility, your crazy, space age organization name always makes me smile.

We now return to our regularly scheduled programming.

Hobo Soup.

Oh, the life of a hobo! Hopping trains, stealing pies and making delicious soup. This can of Hobo Soup has a label so beautiful that it will make you want to keep the can as a collectible rather than eat the contents. If you do eat it, you'll get 15 ounces of hardy bean soup with 100% of your daily allowance of sodium. As the label says, "A jungle recipe fit for a king!" This product contains milk and soy. Despite the name, it does NOT contain any actual hobo.

Ice cream therapy.

A funny little invention.

Dr. Whippy, had people queue despite the wet wet weather in the streets of Linz during ars electronica. The machine proffers soft scoop ice cream according to the perceived unhappiness level of the customer.

"Employing voice stress analysis of the user’s answers to specific questions, varying degrees of unhappiness are measured and the counteractive quantity of ice cream is dispensed: The more unhappy you are, the more ice cream you need."

Great cubicle art.

I shall print and hang. And perhaps, periodically, put a name on the head of cauliflower. In pencil so I can change it depending on my mood.

The American Gallery of Juror Art.

Anne W. Reed, a local trial lawyer and jury consultant, made my day last Wednesday. She emailed me to ask if she could add some of my photos to her "American Gallery of Juror Art."

If you've ever been on jury duty, you know a good portion of it is simply waiting to be called. Attorney Reid created this gallery to highlight art (I use the term verrry loosely in my case) made by people who have been summoned for jury duty. She trawls flickr looking for juror art. What a GREAT idea. I'm hoping she gets many, many more voluntary submissions.

Here's her blog, Deliberations.

And here's the gallery:

Thanks again, Anne! :)

Toast messenger.

Sadly (fortunately?) my cats don't know how to use the toaster. Or the vacuum cleaner. Which is the first toast topic I'd have for them.
