google sheep view

Just what it says on the tin - an artist and an archivist are teaming up to find all the sheep on Google Street View. So random it made me laugh.

Herb Lester: An East London Companion.

I am a HUGE fan of Herb Lester maps. This new one looks fab – and, at £4, it's a steal.

This guide takes as its subject the area from Old Street to Hackney Wick, exploring and uncovering delights old and new, places to eat and drink, cultural centres, shops and markets. Even veteran east Londoners are likely to learn of new places to visit.

The map features a Brazilian butcher on Mare Street and a Mexican food and supplies warehouse off Hackney Road; a candle shop and paper bag supplier, pubs, cafés, and even some galleries. The 99 entries represent the very best east London has to offer.

Herb Lester — Where The Sidewalk Ends: How to find old New York

I'm a BIG fan of Herb Lester maps. I have two from London, and I may have to add this new one to my collection. Whether you use them for navigation or just enjoy the design, they're really lovely.

This is a guide to the New York you’ve always wanted to see but feared might have disappeared for good. It depicts a city of Edward Hopper diners and down-at-heel dive bars, overstocked grocery stores and mountainous pastrami sandwiches. From Patsy’s Pizzeria in Harlem, to the Nom Wah Tea Parlor in Chinatown, taking in along the way Katz's, the '21' Club and McSorley's Old Ale House, in these long-established Manhattan businesses, the city’s cantankerous spirit lives on.

The map has been designed and illustrated by New York’s own Jim Datz. It is A3 (297x420mm) folded to A6 (105x148mm), and litho printed on recycled paper.

Frozen Britain seen from above.

Beautiful and terrifying.

This striking image taken by Nasa's Terra satellite on 7 January shows the UK deep in the clutches of the current cold snap.

Soft-Maps - map quilts.

Anyone who knows me well knows I have an almost-pathological quilt fixation. My pal, Kristel, knows me all too well. She sent me a link to these. Infographic AND quilty-comfy??? I'm completely in love.

Milky Way Transit Authority

(Click the pic to embiggen.)

Our galaxy is unimaginably vast, and we really have no idea what is out there. We are discovering new planets in other star systems all the time, learning new facts about the galactic core, and even learning about whole new portions of the galaxy. This map is an attempt to approach our galaxy with a bit more familiarity than usual and get people thinking about long-term possibilities in outer space.

Last Breath in Alaska: Found Object

Sometimes the simplest things are the most amusing. Check out the link - you'll see what I mean.

Greetings from Bruceville.

I'm not a fan of The Boss myself, but I respect those who are. (There are a number of them in my family.) So, Bruce fans, this one's for you. For the rest of you, Strange Maps is a fantastic site. You should check it out.

James Joyce once boasted that, should Dublin ever disappear off the face of the earth, the city could be reconstructed from the references to it in ‘Ulysses’. The maker of this map did something similar: ‘Bruceville’ is New Jersey, as it can be reconstructed out of Bruce Springsteen’s lyrics.

Web Trend Map 2008 Beta

What I love the most about this (besides its wonderful IA goodness) is that Coudal, our fellow midwestern creatives, are on it.

We present you with the 2008 Web Trend Map, in all its beautiful beta glory. This time we’ve taken almost 300 of the most influential and successful websites and pinned them down to the greater Tokyo-area train map. By popular demand, we enlarged the poster size from A3 to A0. We guarantee it will make a great addition to your home or office.

SPAM/MAPS.

A series of maps made of Spam luncheon meat. Spam was used as ration by the United States Armed Forces during WWII. It ultimately spread through many Southeast Asian nations as a standard source of meat. Spam’s diasporic nature is symbolic of America’s ongoing influence on many nations.

Thank you, Rethinking Schools.

Thanks to this interactive drag & drop map, I can listen to NPR with confidence. Seriously, I could not have told you where Azerbaijan was before I played this a few times. (Okay, a few dozen times.) A beautiful example of how educational the interweb can be.

Maps For Us

The children of the US America are in deep trouble. Because some people out there don't have maps. Such as South Africa.
