Cardboard Leaf Wreath.

Pretty.

Here's a wreath that looks great, and that won't fade with the season. That's because it's made from 100% recycled cardboard. While it's striking in its native white, it can easily be decorated with paint, glitter, or whatever else you might like to apply.

Support your local indie bookstore.

I saw a few of these while I was shopping at my lovely neighborhood bookstore, Boswell Book Company (aka the old Schwartz on Downer - RIP), and completely fell in love. Turns out, you can buy them online.

p.s. Just a personal plea to my gorgeous readers - this holiday season, please, PLEASE support your local indie bookstore. Indies are all about a genuine passion for books and reading. They give back to the community, and their service is usually fabulous. A booming Christmas season will help them get through the more difficult times the rest of the year. The bonus is that, when you're really stressed out about the holidays, nothing is better for getting your heart rate back to normal than wandering around a pretty little bookstore.

Surveillance 100 lamp.

This ironic work uses the typical appearance of a surveillance camera to create a striking standing lamp.

Not initially intended to make a political statement, this light received a lot of attention after its first exhibition at the 2008 Stockholm Furniture Fair from political bloggers and media, and in hindsight, the designers are proud that their work has been part of the public discourse about surveillance in our society.

Limited Edition of 100 pieces of the original lamp's prototype.

Rock/pop lyrics letterpress prints.

These are fun.

These are part of Sarah Utter's recent work at Olympia Community Print, where she explored the lyrics that influenced her growing up.

Each print is slightly different, and the color of the inks changed with each one. Smudging and inconsistency are part of the process, and give them a rich character. Hand inked and letter-pressed on an antique "Vandercook 14" proofing press using soy-oil based inks.

These look great put in a simple frame. Ships wrapped in cellophane and backed by a reclaimed album cover.

Each is limited to 20 copies, all numbered on the back.

Educational prints.

Fun vintage prints at Three Potato Four.

These children's elementary educational charts from the 1950s provide simple and wonderfully illustrated explanations of basic science principles. Each chart is in good to very good vintage condition showing only minor surface wear and the occasional mild yellowing (please see photos). Prints measure 12.75" by 16" and are sold individually.

"Exit Strategy" by Jesse LeDoux.

These would be absolutely perfect for a kid's room. Kids should look at sunny, happy things and try to figure them out. That's what I think anyway. (It's a shame they're only 5x7. These would be fantastic as a large-scale mural.)

"With Exit Strategy, Jesse LeDoux continues to explore themes of escapism and balance. This new work playfully creates obtuse diagrams of the negative energies in daily life and the possible escape routes to finding happiness."

Tiny Showcase is proud to present 18 signed archival prints from Jesse LeDoux's Exit Strategy. Each print is available in an edition of 15 pieces.

Prints are available individually or as a boxed set. Purchasing the box set containing all 18 signed and editioned prints entitles you to an original work of art by Jesse LeDoux. When you order the entire collection, your signed archival prints will come boxed with an original ink and gouache piece by the artist.

Happy Friday the 13th!

Just a little background for those of you that are superstitious. (I own a black cat, so obviously, I'm not.)

[...] Charles Panati, one of the leading authorities on the subject of "Origins" maintains that the superstition can be traced back to ancient myth:
The actual origin of the superstition, though, appears also to be a tale in Norse mythology. Friday is named for Frigga, the free-spirited goddess of love and fertility. When Norse and Germanic tribes converted to Christianity, Frigga was banished in shame to a mountaintop and labeled a witch. It was believed that every Friday, the spiteful goddess convened a meeting with eleven other witches, plus the devil - a gathering of thirteen - and plotted ill turns of fate for the coming week. For many centuries in Scandinavia, Friday was known as "Witches' Sabbath."

Another theory about the origin of the superstition traces the event to the arrest of the legendary Knights Templar. According to one expert:
The Knights Templar were a monastic military order founded in Jerusalem in 1118 C.E., whose mission was to protect Christian pilgrims during the Crusades. Over the next two centuries, the Knights Templar became extraordinarily powerful and wealthy. Threatened by that power and eager to acquire their wealth, King Philip secretly ordered the mass arrest of all the Knights Templar in France on Friday, October 13, 1307 - Friday the 13th.

Happy Veterans Day.

Thanks, Canterbury Tales blog. I didn't know this.

Veterans Day is celebrated on November 11 because it is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I in 1918. An interesting bit of trivia is that the Germans signed the Armistice on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month of that year.

November 11 is remembered in the United Kingdom as "Remembrance Day" and as "Armistice Day" in France. In some locales a moment of silence is kept at the eleventh hour.
