Six word stories.

... Hemingway once wrote a story in just six words ("For sale: baby shoes, never worn.") and is said to have called it his best work. So we asked sci-fi, fantasy, and horror writers from the realms of books, TV, movies, and games to take a shot themselves.

Best part? They got A-list designers to kick in and set the stories to type. Chip Kidd, John Maeda, Tomato... Very cool. check it out. (I should read Wired more.)

Okay. I normally hate these photo caption-y things, but - well, YOU just try to resist...

Designer geekery.

b3ta.com writes:
"Match the hexadecimal colour codes with the actual colour. Do as many as you can in 60 seconds, or until your brain melts down at having to compare #f784e0 and #e4040e." Sheesh, this is hard, but web designers might get a few kicks from it.

Technical difficulties. Please stand by.

The Halloween gremlins at Blogger have been working overtime this week. If you're having trouble accessing my blog, it's because they're working on the Blogger servers. This has been going on for days, making it difficult to post anything and sometimes impossible to access my blog at all. Very annoying and frustrating. But it will sort itself out soon. Promise. If not, I'll be heading over to Typepad, I guess...

I love this photo.

My kind of politicking.

Every October, placards touting candidates you’ve never heard of litter yards and medians across the nation. MATTHEW BALDWIN creates his own campaign signs, and invites you to do the same for our Election Day photo gallery.

For XTC fans.

If you're a fan, you know that XTC memorabilia is rare indeed. There are only 200 of these, and Andy and Colin are signing each set, so I'm sure they'll go fast.

Idea have commissioned sculptor Ian Kay of York’s Irregular Miniatures to bring to life what is hoped will be a whole range of xtc collectors figures in metal. Each set will show the band from a period in their history commencing with the ‘White Music’ era. You’ll get Andy, Colin, Terry and Barry in a live setting with relevant instruments (e.g. Barry comes with his Krumar Organ and Lawrence Piano), dressed in their monochrome best, all figures (55mm high) and equipment are cast in white metal and are hand painted, held securely in foam and clad in a pictorial card sleeve which will be signed by Andy and Colin.

Light + brick = heat.

Gluh*lampe picks up the heat energy that is produced by the lightbulb as a waste product and makes it useable. The heat is bundled in a brick which ... radiates even one hour after switching off the light. The colour of the brick stone adds to the idea and provides a very warm light. The brick can easily be disconnected from the bulb and can be used as a bedwarmer just like in granny's times.

this is what i was put on earth to do

My lovelylovely friend, Molly (a.k.a. The Girl), sent this to me awhile ago with this note:

I saw one that was my favorite, and it just made me think of you. I heard your giggle when I saw it.

I think that may be the sweetest email ever. FYI - every time I run across this in my email, I DO giggle.

Halloween guinea pig.

I'm not a fan of guinea pigs OR dressing up animals in costumes, but this still made me chuckle.

Biodegradable Plates, Cups & Utensils

I posted the utensils awhile ago, but now Branch is carrying an entire line. Nice. And the prices are very reasonable.

These disposable (and biodegradable, and compostable) dinnerware pieces are designed for elegant entertaining, indoors or out. They're attractive, unbleached, FDA-approved food-safe, and they're much sturdier than standard paper plates. (They're comparable to Chinet™ brand plates.) Not only are they made from renewable resources (see above), they're microwavable, freezer safe, oil resistant, and capable of handling hot foods and beverages. After use, this product can be recycled for the making of paper, or 100% catabolized as compost.

Dinnerware is sold in quantities indicated in the pull-down menu below.

The potato-starch cutlery is sturdy, attractive, reusable, and suitable for hot foods up to 220° F. It will biodegrade within 180 days in a commercial composting facility, but is currently only certified for biodegradability under the ISO 14855 standards. (Certification under the ASTM standards for compostability is in process.)

Freeze your shadow.

This high-tech strobe freezes shadows on the wall – you keep moving, but your shadow doesn't. Add doodles, details and other drawings with the special light pen.

I'd love to see this one in action.

Maddox Jolie Adopts George Clooney

In an unprecedented move, celebrities who've adopted children, and imbued them with status and wealth never before experienced by toddlers, are now going a step further, and allowing them to adopt celebrities. A recent example is Maddox Jolie - who's own personal wealth exceeds $68 million - and who has succesfully adopted George Clooney. Clooney is rumored to be overjoyed at the adoption and was spotted at Baby Gap purchasing a dozen toddler's boys hats (size 12 to 18m), all in multi-colored blue.

Really, really odd collectibles.

Loads of beautiful things. But I have to say - the Art Deco mannequin and the giant ceramic heart caught my eye...

Concrete. It's not just for sidewalks anymore.

The more I see concrete home accessories, the more I'm liking them. These, for instance, are really simple and elegant and, I think, quite beautiful.

How cool are these shelves?

(Unfortunately, I'm guessing international shipping for these babies is probably not a good idea.)

Love the lamps.

This one's fab. Waaaay too expensive (inviting knockoffs to pop up pretty quickly), but fabulous. Along the lines of Candela, these are rechargeable and will keep their charge for 6 - 10 hours.
