PieGram - send someone a pie.

Need a perfect, unique gift? Look no further than PieGram. I had no idea this existed, much less that it's a fine local business from Milwaukee.

PieGrams are made with love in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at Honeypie Cafe.  We make our mini pies in small batches, by hand with locally and regionally sourced ingredients. PieGrams are shipped out on Mondays and Wednesdays via the United States Postal Service Two-Day Priority mail.  We can ship anywhere in the continental U.S. PieGrams can also be purchased in person at our store in Milwaukee if you need one right away.
Orders include cute cards by Milwaukee artists:

Check the PieGram site for full details.

I read last night (in an article I don't have time to find) that to make sure the pies are destroyed in the mail, they made pies, put them in the trunk of their car and drove around for a few days. Midwest quality assurance rules.

The most heartbreaking thing I've ever read.

I normally wouldn't do this because my blog is unabashedly about designy, funny, joyful things, but I CANNOT stop thinking about this. Let me start by saying I don't actually know Melissa Bissing. I saw a tweet by a friend of hers, linked to Mel's twitter account (@mbissing) and started reading her blog. She's a local woman who's been keeping a blog about her triplets since they were born.

In the last week, her blog has become of the most brutally honest, terrifying, heartbreaking things I've ever read.

Mel and Doug, her husband, have been in the hospital the last six days, following an (as yet unidentified) illness or accident. Owen, one of the triplets, has been in a coma and will not recover.

Mel's "mommy blog" has suddenly become an online journal, and it's beautiful and gut wrenching.

The question of what to do (organ donation), how to stay strong for her other little ones, how much of Owen's siblings' identity is tied up in being triplets, how she will react when someone mentions how cute her "twins" are – hundreds of questions I'd never even think to ask – she's writing about it all. Her writing style is so lovely, and her attitude so incredible, that reading it is an exercise in humanity.

Even if you can't bear to read her blog, if you have a moment, you might want to stop by to offer condolences or share a kind word. This is a strong, amazing young woman, but I think every tiny bit of kindness will help in the coming days.

Indulgence Chocolatiers.

A little local love here for Indulgence Chocolatiers, made right here in The MKE. (I got mine at Beans & Barley, if you're local and interested.)

But first - a confession. I ate a $6.75 chocolate-with-sea-salt bar in one sitting last night. I'm not proud that I did it, but it was was all, "Oh, hey - I'm supersmooth chocolate with salty little crystals that pop into the sweet melty chocolate in your mouth." And I was all, like, "DAMN you. I'm powerless against your sweet and savory wiles." (Except way more muffled because I had a mouth full of chocolate.)

And now that I know they have espresso/limoncello truffles (WHAT?), I'm almost terrified. Buy some of this crack for someone you love. Free shipping until 2/11.

Every morsel of chocolate offered by Indulgence Chocolatiers is meticulously handcrafted in our Milwaukee area kitchen. Our use of the finest imported Belgian chocolate gives our delicacies their rich flavor and smooth texture. As delicious as they are beautiful, our chocolates are sure to impress even the most sophisticated palate.

grain edit's Little Friends of Printmaking interview.

Since Grain Edit is one of my desert island websites (assuming I have wifi there), I was really happy to see that they featured Milwaukee's own Little Friends of Printmaking yesterday. Yaaaay!

What do you guys like best about Milwaukee? Would you ever consider moving?

JW: Well, it sounds like a terrible cliché, but I genuinely fear moving because we’re so accustomed to fresh beer, and incredible cheese and sausage. Did I say incredible? I think I meant phenomenal. An aged Gouda that will make the little hairs on the back of your neck stand on end. It’s too bad because I think the major design capitals don’t share our commitment to dairy.

the dwellary.

Ladles and jellyspoons, please check out the online journal of my favorite Milwaukee artist, dwellephant, aka Milan Zori.

I love his stuff. I own one of his too-cool masonite paintings which I'd be happy to show you if I hadn't forgotten my camera cord at work. Doh. Will upload later.

Now this is a Harley I could ride.

Those of you that don't live here may not know that Milwaukee is the Harley Davidson headquarters. There's a new Harley museum opening next Saturday (I initially had the date wrong - sorry), and The L.A. Times just featured a nice piece about it. I found this picture in the photo gallery. It made me giggle.

Another exhibit is the oldest known Harley, the "Serial Number One," from the early 1900s when William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson first presented to the public the Harley-Davidson motorcycle.

Midwest Airlines: Save the Cookie.

Please sign Midwest Airline's "Save the Cookie" petition to keep Airtran from taking over our favorite Midwest airline.

I actually don't care about the cookies, but I can't buy a nice, big, comfy airline seat at my local grocery store. Midwest is the only really nice economy-class airline out there. If it goes, we're all screwed.

Bad news/good news for Milwaukee radio.

Bad news:
We don't have a jazz radio station in Milwaukee anymore. That sucks.

Good news:
As of 7AM Monday, we'll have what appears to be a true "alternative" radio station. Based on the teasers they're running this weekend, the music is like the iPod of someone with great, eclectic taste in music. I'm excited!
