Tree, Line.

"Tree, Line" is an ongoing series by Welsh artist Zander Olsen created by wrapping tree trunks with white material to "construct a visual relationship between tree, not-tree and the line of horizon according to the camera's viewpoint." The pieces below were created in Surrey, Hampshire and Wales.

The Wish Tree (Washington D.C.)

Every autumn, sometime in November, the leaves fall off and the tree becomes a whispering tree. Rather than hang their wishes from the tree on small strips of paper, as they do during the warmer months, visitors are encouraged to snuggle up to the tree and whisper their wishes to it.

But, come June, the tree buds again and the Hirshhorn provides pencils and little tags to write with and to hang on the tree.

Each day exhibit staff and intern volunteers pluck the tags from the tree.

“We harvest the wishes and send them to the Yoko Ono Peace Tower in Iceland where they become part of a larger collection of wishes that the artist has amassed,” Hirshhorn communications director Gabriel Riera told me in an e-mail.

Each "book" describes a certain tree species and is made out of the actual wood (the "covers"). The spine is covered by the bark, where mosses and lichens from the same tree are arranged. "Books" of shrubs are covered with mosses with split branches on both covers and spines.

Inside there are dried leaves, flowers, fruits, seedlings, a piece of the root, cut branches, seeds - similarly arranged in every "book". In a compartment inside the spine lies a delicately written description of the tree, its biology and its practical use.
