Thriving Garden in Sealed Bottle Hasn't Been Watered in Over 40 Years

I have to share this. I love that science and mystery so often seem like the same thing.

When David Latimer planted a seed in a glass bottle on Easter Sunday of 1960 out of pure curiosity, he had no idea that it would flourish into a mass of greenery that would thrive untouched for several decades. Now, over half a century later, the sealed bottle garden is still growing as vigorously as ever, filling the bottle entirely with lush plant life, despite the fact that the last time Latimer watered it was in 1972.

Free your Shutterfly photos! 40% off!

For years I've wanted to download my original photos from Shutterfly, but they made it nearly impossible. At first you couldn't actually get your photos back at full resolution at all. In the last few years, I found that I could download my library, but I'd have to do it photo by photo, or I'd have to pay beaucoup bucks to have them send me a DVD. Both made me super huffy, so I did neither.

But today I discovered they're having a 40% off sale. Yay! In just a few minutes, I selected all my photos and ordered a CD of 2500+ photos at their original resolution for $8.50. I'm so psyched.

Use SHARE40 in the shopping cart for your discount. Sale ends 9/29, so scoot! Get over there!

The U.N.'s 17 New Goals To Build A Better World

I had no idea the U.N. had such an ambitious agenda for the next 15 years. Boosting the signal on this because more people should know. And it's a lovely infographic.
At the United Nations General Assembly this weekend in New York, U.N. member states are set to adopt the new Sustainable Development Goals. The goals are meant to guide development priorities around the globe over the next 15 years.

Tough Guys Have Feelings Too: Keith Negley

I was very excited to see an announement on Facebook yesterday about this new picture book by Keith Negley, an old colleague of mine. He's a great guy and ridiculously brilliant illustrator, so I'm sure this new book is going to be amazing. It's out in October – Amazon can notify you via email when it's out.

A boldly illustrated picture book read-aloud about how everyone gets sad—ninjas, wrestlers, knights, superheroes, everyone . . . even daddies have emotions!
Did you know wrestlers have feelings? And knights. Even superheroes and ninjas feel sad sometimes. In fact everyone has feelings—especially dads who love their children!
Children will love recognizing their feelings in Keith Negley's bold illustrations which accompany a fun-to-read-aloud narrative.

Inkless Polaroid.

Want. Wantwantwantwantwant. That is all.

Called the Polaroid Plus, the new camera will use Zero Ink Technology developed by the tech company ZINK. The special paper has cyan, magenta, and yellow ink dye crystals embedded inside it, and the camera's job is to activate the colored dye in the appropriate places. Afterward, the camera can spit out a 2- by 3-inch picture to show your friends. Since it's a digital camera, the Polaroid Plus can also save the picture on a memory card of up to 32GB. That way you can download the pictures later if you want to have them printed out a little bigger.

Paintings in movies.

I was watching the film Side Effects on Netflix a few days ago and thought, "That painting behind Jude Law is amazing. I wonder who the artist is?"

Well, thank you, Internet. There's a site for that.
