Super Mamika is back! (This time with a chicken named Bob.)

I posted about Mamika's superhero photos back in 2010. And I'll post about her again now because she's awesome and fabulous.

Three years ago, photographer Sacha Goldberger became an internet sensation with his photos of his then 91-year old grandmother "Mamika" dressed as a superhero. Now Mamika is back, traveling the world with her friend, Bob the chicken.

Cinderella's Boxing tank.

I have no idea why I dig this tank tee from Arquebus so much, but I really do. (Maybe because it has old time-y graphics and looks like something Starbuck might wear.)

Perhaps mixtapes aren't dead after all.

Analog fun in a digital age. (And kudos to them for beautifully simple website navigation.)

Sharetapes "are physical cards that contain NFC (Near Field Communication) chips and QR codes so they can play mix-tapes on smartphones and tablets."

Using your existing platforms like Spotify, YouTube, 8tracks and more, you can create personalised playlists which will then be saved onto your very own Sharetape(s) by hitting record at sharetapes.com. Share tapes with friends who can simply tap with NFC (if they have a recent Android, Windows or Blackberry device), or scan the sharetape using any QR code reader app (on all Smartphones, including iPhones).

Liu Bolin, the invisible artist.

After watching the Smithsonian video, I went to check out his site. I like.

Possibly my new favorite term: "Spite House."

Houses built (most in ridiculously ways or places) to spite a neighbor, family member or local government.

A Nevada man bought the lot next door to one of his enemies and built his own house less than a foot from his neighbor's, blocking his neighbor's view and cutting off the ventilation on that side of the house.

This house is 7 feet wide, built in 1830 by the cranky owner of one of the buildings next door because he wanted to keep people from using the alley next to his house.

SIGN PAINTERS (OFFICIAL TRAILER).

So proud to be from Milwaukee, the same city as the folks who created and independently funded this documentary about the art and industry of hand-lettered signs.

SIGN PAINTERS (OFFICIAL TRAILER).

There was a time, as recently as the 1980s, when storefronts, murals, banners, barn signs, billboards, and even street signs were all hand-lettered with brush and paint. But, like many skilled trades, the sign industry has been overrun by the techno-fueled promise of quicker and cheaper. The resulting proliferation of computer-designed, die-cut vinyl lettering and inkjet printers has ushered a creeping sameness into our landscape. Fortunately, there is a growing trend to seek out traditional sign painters and a renaissance in the trade.

In 2010 Directors Faythe Levine and Sam Macon, with Cinematographer Travis Auclair, began documenting these dedicated practitioners, their time-honored methods, and their appreciation for quality and craftsmanship. Sign Painters, the first anecdotal history of the craft, features the stories of more than two dozen sign painters working in cities throughout the United States. The documentary and book profiles sign painters young and old, from the new vanguard working solo to collaborative shops such as San Francisco’s New Bohemia Signs and New York’s Colossal Media’s Sky High Murals.

The book published by Princeton Architectural Press in November 2012 features a foreword by legendary artist (and former sign painter) Ed Ruscha. We encourage you to pick up a copy at your local book shop, or directly from Princeton Architectural Press - goo.gl/aTZLq

50 CENTS A YEAR to end SEVEN diseases by 2020.

That's all it will take. The problem is huge; the solution is simple. Seriously, 50 CENTS. That's how cheap medication is. And it's simply not getting to the people that need it.

This first video is incredibly powerful and persuasive. But, if you're a bit squeamish (or eating at the moment), you can watch the second video for the whole story.

I've dug in and believe this is a truly noble cause. So, I'm spreading the word and donating $5/mo. I hope you'll donate as well – even if it's just 50 cents, one time.

End7 is a campaign from The Global Network – an initiative of the U.S.-based Sabin Vaccine Institute – that works with international partners at the highest levels of government, business, and society to break down the logistical and financial barriers to delivering existing NTD treatments to the people who need them most.

Thomas Doyle’s Apocalyptic Dioramas.

I never tire of looking at beautifully designed, meticulous dioramas. And these are even more mesmerizing because of their inherent drama. Fantastic.

Using materials that would equally be at home amongst idyllic model train sets artist Thomas Doyle builds these incredibly intricate mixed media dioramas that instead suggest something much darker. The sense of loss and a brooding darkness is present in almost every piece, where homes dangle on sheer cliffs, or are surrounded by apocalyptic waste.

Happy, Happy Valentine's Day, peoples.

Enamorado by Blanca Gomez.
Not to get too personal, folks, but I adore Valentine's Day.
I've always believed that Valentine's Day is for everyone and every type of love, regardless of romantic status. If you don't have a boyfriend/girlfriend/husband/wife/significant other, just take today to shower a little (or a lot of) love on your friends and family and pets and favorite co-workers and that checker at Walgreens who's maybe having a bad day. Whomever or whatever it takes. Just spread some love. It'll pay off in karma points. Trust me.
Whether I know you personally or you just happened to stop by my blog today, I'm sending love and grins out to you. xo

It's World Radio Day.

Confession: I am a huge radio nerd.

I was a radio junkie from a young age - listening to AM radio when I was growing up in tiny Horicon, Wisconsin. Now I listen to NPR's Morning Edition every morning; BBC Radio 4 Extra radio drama, mystery and sci fi plays while doing the dishes; and BBC World News before bed. I'm completely addicted to the TuneIn radio app that allows you to listen to radio from anywhere in the world (including one from Antarctica!).

So, I am celebrating World Radio Day with gusto and gratitude for all the joy and information radio adds to my life. I hope you are as well.

Radio has to be recognized as a low-cost medium, specifically suited to reach remote communities and vulnerable people: the illiterate, the disabled, women, youth and the poor, while offering a platform to intervene in the public debate, irrespective of people's educational level. Furthermore, radio has a strong and specific role in emergency communication and disaster relief. There is also a changing face to radio services which, in the present times of media convergence, are taking up new technological forms, such as broadband, mobile and tablets. However, it is said that up to a bllion people still do not have access to radio today.  (source)

Jerry & Kramer floorplan print.

A perfect gift for your favorite designy Seinfeld fan.

If you ever wondered where on earth Kramer put his hot tub or the Merv Griffin set, you’ll find the answers. Keep in mind this one’s all fantasy, especially Kramer's floorplan. You'll see a couch made from a 1957 Chevy backseat. In his bath there is a Clarkman garbage disposal in the tub. On the sink counter is butter which Kramer uses for shaving . . .and tanning. Jerry's floorplan features cereal in the kitchen, an early apple computer on his desk and 12 cent checks from Japan on the table

PUBLIC Farmers Market Twin Pannier

If you know anything about cycling, you probably know that nice bike gear can be crazy expensive. $39 is a great price for a really useful, well-designed bike accessory like this.

We designed our PUBLIC Farmers Market Twin Panniers inspired by the traditional bicycle bags that are seen throughout Europe and especially in Holland, modifying them for the US market (and making them more affordable). They sit like saddle bags on the rear rack and have a handy carrying handle that makes it easy for taking on and off (though many of us prefer to leave them permanently on the bike). Having twin panniers allows you to store your lock and helmet, sweater or jacket when not in use. It also provides you with enough space for a shoulder bag, purse, groceries, laptop, bottles of wine, and anything else you might pick up along the road.
Our panniers are made from durable fabric that is usually used for trucking tarps. The white fabric is highly visible, the colorful panels and stripes add a splash of fun, and the reflective tape adds a splash of safety.

Web Development explained simply.

Computers are used to share pictures, words, and movies (usually of cats) with other computers. The computers need to show the cats on boxes with tiny lights in them, but don’t know how. People like me tell the computer many words so that it knows how to change the tiny lights to look like a cat. We try to make the lights change very fast so that you don’t have to wait for your cats. Some days the lights are all wrong, and we have to tell the computer more words to make them look like cats again.
