Evan Robertson's literary giclée prints.

Illustrator and lover of literature Evan Robertson is a modern day Renaissance man. Each of the giclée prints that make up Obvious State, combines a favorite quote and one of Robertson’s stunning original illustrations. Tortured artists, English majors, and bookworms will love this collection of poignant prints.

Jesus art.

Because I like to think that Jesus DOES have kittens. And that I DO amuse him.

(This post is dedicated to my friend, Jason, because Jesus loves him especially.)

250,000 Bees Find A Home Atop the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in Manhattan | Inhabitat New York City

This is just so cool. (Hopefully none of their staff is allergic to bee stings.)

The 20th floor of New York’s Waldorf-Astoria now accommodates some rather unusual residents — around 250,000 bees living on the roof of the prestigious hotel. Transported to their new midtown Manhattan digs by a Lincoln Towncar, the pollinating inhabitants of the six beehives were placed there to support the PlaNYC initiative to plant 1,000,000 new trees over the next decade. The hotel will benefit directly too, with their own in-house supply of sustainable honey!

"What Good..." Enamel Steel Sign

Oh, Best Made. You are the best.

In his autobiography Benjamin Franklin outlined a "Precept of Order, requiring that every part of my business should have its allotted time, one page in my little book contain'd the following scheme of employment for the twenty-four hours of a natural day." The first order of business in his precept was to ask himself simply, "What good shall I do this day?" With this concise introspection guiding him a great American luminary got cracking. What good shall you do this day? Whether it's nailed to the wall, leaned up against a bookshelf, or offered as an inspirational gift, we know that this enamel sign — designed with the original Best Made "Indicator" typeface — will lay the foundations to a virtuous day.

R.I.P., Nora Ephron.

What a great lady.

Nora Ephron, successful in movies and journalism, dies at 71; was known for devastating wit

btdubs – I've been told by a reader (thanks, mcnamara!) that the quote image above is by Gina Loukareas in AisFor.org. I can't find the image there, but I'm going to assume no one would lie to me about this. :)

Dick Clark’s bizarre stone house.

Wow. I mean... wow.

According to Mental Floss, he really wanted to live in this location and designing it this way got it through building approvals in a park conservancy area. But that doesn't really explain the interior. Eek.

Beyoncé the Giant Metal Chicken.

I've been seeing a CRAZY amount of Beyoncés lately, so I keep thinking about this post by The Bloggess, Jenny Lawson. It is, quite honestly, pure wonder and genius. I'm re-posting it in the hope that I can spread joy to anyone who hasn't read it yet.

NYTimes.com: Revisiting the Era of Automatic Dining

I LOVE Automats. Why won't anyone bring them back?? *sigh*

The Automats featured gleaming machines marketed as newfangled gadgets that dispensed fresh food barely touched by human hands.

Salt Made From Tears.

I love Hoxton Street Monster Supplies.

Salt Made From Tears combines centuries-old craft with the freshest human tears which are gently boiled, released into shallow crystallisation tanks, then harvested by hand and finally rinsed in brine. Experience the full range of these flavours in this exclusive collection.

Helvetica Poster.

This poster, in eight pieces, is quite lovely and very reasonably priced. (Especially since you don't have to frame it.) Nice job, Print Handbook Store.

These posters are printed using silver metallic ink (Pantone 877) on 250gsm Burgundy Keaykolour.

Each poster is made from 8 individual A5 cards (148 x 210mm or 5.8 x 8.3in). When combined they produce a poster that is slightly larger than A2 (420 x 594mm or 16.5 x 23.4in).

BBC: Perfume-puffing robot sniffs out social media mentions

I find the idea of a social media-driven air freshener strangely disturbing.

Called Olly, the robot watches the millions of messages passing through social networks and spots when its owner is mentioned. For every mention or referral Olly emits a waft of scent as a "reward" for the online interaction.

Retro Basic Custom Wall Sticker.

I was never a gamer, but I kind of want one of these retro custom wall stickers.

A bit target reference, but anyone who owned a home computer in the 80's whether it be a ZX-81, Commodore 64 or BBC (acorn electron doesn't count!), will remember typing this in at some point (we certainly did!). Anyway, you can customise this wall sticker with your own text to add a bit of retro basic to your wall.

Signs of Affection project.

If I ran the world, most of the design industry would be busy making/doing stuff like this.

Established in May 2010, the Signs of Affection project aims to make the walls talk. Short positive messages are placed in public spaces around the world to be seen by thousands. To get involved you can submit a few words [...] If your entry is chosen it will be designed, screen-printed and sent to you all for free! Copies will also be sent across the world to be pasted-up on the walls of other cities.

Go on – submit an idea to The Signs of Affection Project.

First Book: Access to New Books for Children in Need

Does your mom (like mine) insist that she doesn't need any gifts for Mother's Day? If you still want to give her a gift without getting yelled at, you might want to consider donating to this really lovely organization. They provide books to schools and community programs so low-income kids can learn to love the same bedtime stories the rest of us do.

Forty-two percent of children in the United States — more than 30 million — live in low-income households. Most of these children have no age-appropriate books at home, and the classrooms and programs they attend are woefully under-resourced. Approximately two-thirds of these schools and programs cannot afford to buy books at retail prices.

The Real Reason They Still Play 'Mrs. Robinson' On The Radio.

A tiny piece of a big, beautiful infographic about the ridiculous amounts of power and money The Big Six have over America's media.

Enabled by FCC deregulation and a decades-long orgy of mergers and acquisitions, [...] six giants dominate our media landscape. Until regulations return (or they buy each other out of existence), they will continue to control 90% of everything Americans see, hear and consider important.

Birds of Paradise.

Wow. I love birds anyway, but these completely blow my mind.

Pteridophora alberti
Plumes such as the King of Saxony's graceful head ribbons offer ancestral strength to the people who wear them, according to local belief.

Paradisaea rubra
Framed by its wiry tail feathers, a red bird of paradise is nature's valentine—an apt emblem for this family of birds famous for fanciful plumage and elaborate courtship rituals.
